Determining the Credibility of Evidence and Resources

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an effective strategy with which a healthcare institute can get tons of knowledge regarding illnesses and treatment which improves the quality of care services. For the implementation of an appropriate plan, there is a need to set some standard or criteria for model implementation which will make the application of the EBP plan successful. For better execution of an evidence-based approach for the best healthcare services, IOWA model is a well-suited and appropriate model. It provides the direction or pathway of the implementation for better, safe, and quality healthcare (Cullen et al., 2022).  The IOWA model is a standard or criteria for EBP for all healthcare providers for maternal and neonatal care.

The Quality Or Safety Issue That Can Benefit From Evidence-Based Practices

Maternal and neonatal care is a specific area of attention in the USA as compared to other countries. In the USA, many women give birth at home, some at birth centers, and others in the healthcare centers. Females are handled by different healthcare providers and these providers are accredited, trained, equipped, and licensed in different ways (Backes & Scrimshaw, 2020). Maternal and neonatal care in the USA can be strengthened by an evidence-based approach to postpartum care and the psychological well-being of the mother. Many studies have validated that women experience many changed emotions and require special care in the pre-and post-delivery time period. Particularly, new mothers need assistance in breastfeeding and performing physical tasks. Some common mistakes and lack of care from the healthcare side, stop new mothers from breastfeeding (Rahnemaie et al., 2019).

This negligence can further complicate post-partum issues which are emotionally, physically, psychologically, and financially disadvantageous for both family members and healthcare providers. Evidence-based practice can assist in providing a roadmap for the midwives and OBs nurses for special care of a new mother and her baby. This plan will be based on the experiences and feedback of other patients and healthcare professionals. COVID-19 was a complex time all across the globe particularly for pregnant women and new mothers.

Evidence-based practice has enabled us to compile the experience of patients and healthcare workers for changing the current healthcare system. This evidence highlights the importance of strong interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients (Semaan et al., 2020).  EBP will help healthcare professionals to design training sessions, education, licensing, courses, and therapies for better maternal and neonatal care.

The Rationale for the Benefit of Applying an Evidence-Based Approach

The objective behind the application of EBP for better maternal and neonatal care can enhance the validity of treatment, precision, economic viability, and perpetual betterment in a positive direction. In this evidence-based practice, the latest scientific knowledge, and research statistics will help to provide better maternal, pre-, and post-neonatal care (Perry et al., 2022).

Criteria for Determining Credibility of Resources

For the determination of the authenticity and validity of the resources, nurses have a significant role. Before applying any healthcare practice or treatment, nurses should validate whether the information is the latest, precise, true, or accurate. The important and foremost standard of validation is to check if the journal findings are based on objective measures or subjective measures.  Before adopting any healthcare principle, nurses should oversee if it is based on credible databases. For instance, if the website presents the statistic that 80 women out of 100 are reluctant to breastfeed.

The responsibility of the nurse is to see whether the sample set is the representative of the entire population, are the findings applicable to all women regardless of race, color, or ethnicity. Is the study objective or based on the subjective perspectives of the author? Is this research article, peer-reviewed or not? Is this the latest information? The treatment which is presented in the research article is applicable in the particular healthcare setting?  If the nurse has ensured all this information, it means the findings of the research article are applicable, up-to-date, and relatable to the particular healthcare setting.

If these questions are satisfied then it will tell that data stats are valid, precise, and accurate. On the basis of this knowledge, a healthcare nurse can replicate the principles in her hospital. Hence, research articles, journals, and online resources are beneficial platforms for a healthcare nurse to accomplish specific organizational goals (Blake et al., 2020).

Ways to Apply Criteria to a Specific Resource

MaternityWorldwide.org is a genuine online website that provides valuable information to the patients and healthcare workers on maternity and post-partum issues. This website provides credible, objective, and valid information on different pregnancy, maternity, and pre-and post-natal issues. It is updated with latest information, precise, and comprehensive, and it renders the best treatment in the domain of pregnancy and maternal care. Online teaching platforms have also enabled medical students to get hands with different useful skills (Dost et al., 2020).

Credibility and Relevance of Evidence and Resources

There is infinite information available on online platforms. So, checking the credibility of it is the most important and much-needed skill in the twenty-first century. The evidence-based sources and resources are evaluated for their authenticity, validity, and relativity on the basis of particular parameters. The integration of such parameters is the “CRAAP” test. It provides a framework and a set of metrics by which website credibility, precision, objectivity, and comprehensiveness is evaluated. It helps healthcare workers to differentiate between credible and non-credible information (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021).

NURS FPX 4030 Assessment 2

The first step of CRAAP testing is to evaluate the authenticity of the source from which the information is extracted for EBP. Is the source credible enough to provide information about maternal and neonatal care? In the second step, the trustworthiness, relevance, and validity of the resource will be assessed. Is the reference original and population set representative? Is the information presented valuable? After evaluating and satisfying all these questions, it needs to be checked whether the information is up-to-date or not.

The most valid and credible resource for maternity and neonatal care is a peer-reviewed book, titled “Maternity Child Nursing Care, Seventh Edition” by Shannon E. Perry (Perry et al., 2022). It has presented in-depth knowledge of maternity nursing from pregnancy, and female reproductive care to delivering a child. It is published in 2023 by Elsevier which is an authentic publication company. It shows that all information in this book on maternity care is up-to-date and credible. This book is also peer-reviewed and based on objective findings which means all information on maternity care is applicable.

The Importance of Incorporating Credible Evidence into an Evidence-Based Practice Model

For guiding the evidence-based practice in the right direction, the IOWA model is a design pathway that inculcates all the research proofs, nursing proficiencies, and patient orientations to take the best healthcare decisions. EBP is implemented for healthcare providers, leaders, and clinical students to adopt the goal of sustainable evidence-based practice (Cullen et al., 2022).

By incorporating an effective IOWA model, it can be ensured in a healthcare organization that the information which is being used is the latest, valid and relevant. This guides them to take well-informed decisions. The IOWA model is developed to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration among different healthcare departments (Duff et al., 2020).

The prime advantage of integrating the IOWA model with valid evidence is that it can enhance the patient care. For instance, if EBP is used for maternal, pre-and post-natal care then the probability of intense post-partum depression will decrease. It will further lessen the complications and encourage women to have healthy motherhood.

Another advantageous aspect of the IOWA model is that it is also economical when integrated with evidence-based practice for maternal care. Recently, there is a growing trend in studying the sustainability of the evidence-based practice which has a strong influence on providing the best public healthcare (Shelton et al., 2018). EBP not only provides the best healthcare treatment but also poses economic benefits as compared to traditional models.

Conclusion

Evidence-based practice is an effective pathway that assists in providing extensive and thorough information on pregnancy, maternal, and pre-and post-natal care. It also helps to prevent the harmful impacts of post-partum depression and related complex issues. The standard practice to determine the authenticity of online resources is by evaluation of precision, relativity, credibility, feasibility, and timeframe of a particular article.  Healthcare providers can take assistance from EBP and contribute to evidence-based practice through their feedback. For maternal and neonatal care, EBP can assist healthcare workers in providing mental, emotional, physical, and post-partum support to women which will avoid many complex issues in the future.
